Weekend Wrap

28 Apr by Jessica Hughes

As the season begins to gain momentum and new teams get to know their players, it is great to read about the hard-fought wins and losses by our Bluetongues Junior and Senior teams over the weekend. Enjoy the latest edition of the Weekend Wrap.

The O/55s Legends had a good 6-1 win v Knox City at Alphington Oval, on a lovely autumn late afternoon. The team started strongly with 2 early goals. Despite some pressure from Knox, the Legends then controlled the game. All played well. With 4 wins from the first 4 games of the season, the team is in good form. Most importantly, the team is playing with the Bluetongues spirit of enjoying the game in a positive and supportive environment.

The U/15 Boys were very unlucky to suffer a 4-2 defeat away to local rivals Yarra Jets this afternoon. Some impressive attacking moves, and disciplined defending saw them on top at times in a close game that swung from one end to the other. Ultimately, we were undone by our opponents long-range shooting and despite some great individual performances, we couldn’t get back into the game, as legs tired at the end of a close match in surprisingly warm conditions.

Men’s Reserves 2-1 loss against FC Birrarung. Couldn’t find a way through a resilient defence who took their chances on the counter.

U/10 Boys BLUE recorded a 6-2 home victory against the Yarra Jets this morning. After playing some good team football and pressing high up the park, the blues were able to convert their chances and take a strong 3-0 score line into the half. The second half was a more concentrated defensive effort, and despite conceding a couple of goals in the second term, the blues managed to grab another 3 goals on the counterattack. A great overall team effort and encouraging first win of the season.

Once again, we were fortunate to be bathed in sweet autumn sunshine for this morning’s game against Watsonia. The U/10 Girls BLUE took the pitch with wonderful enthusiasm and eagerness to have a great game, and that they did. Cohesion and teamwork, matched with positivity and world class half-time oranges ensured a stunning 6-0 victory. Go Bluetongues!

The U/9s Boys BLUE played a well-matched contest against Old Ivanhoe. We lost 3-0 with the third goal coming in stoppage time. We played well, defended strongly and didn’t panic when we had the ball. Encouraging signs.

O/55s UTD had a hard fought 3-2 win to continue a great start to season.

U/12 Girls BLUE launched their season with a 3-4 away win at Essendon Royals. After a stuttered start to the season after last week’s opponents forfeiting, the girls were keen on getting things going. We showed determination and fight. After trailing 1-0 down we had a strong 30 minutes of dominating to go 1-4 up. After a late Royals fightback, we managed to cling on for a win. A notable mention of a Bluetongue Hat-trick in the second half and big congrats to everyone involved today.

The U/12 Girls YELLOW team entered the game with enthusiasm, launching a strong start against the formidable Yarra Jets. During the first half, we held our ground admirably, and despite conceding a couple of goals, the team maintained their resilience. In the second half, our players dug deep, pouring their efforts into every move. Regrettably, the Jets’ well-organized defensive lineup thwarted our strikers, resulting in a final score of 0-6. Despite the loss, our heads remain held high, knowing we gave it our all.

The U/11 Boys played an irrepressible 10 minutes in the first half to score twice and effectively take the game away from Northern Falcons. They had 3 by halftime and ended up winning 4-0.

U/8 Boys put in another solid hard-working performance against a bigger Darebin Utd. 0-0 at half time, with the game going back and forth. Darebin then scored 2 quick goals, but we came roaring back to equalise. Sadly, we conceded a last minute to lose 3-2. Good team performance!

O/45s lost 3-2 to Albion on a frustrating afternoon. Winning 1-0 and 2-1 we couldn’t put the game to bed and conceded two silly goals to lose the game.

A frustrating morning for U/9 YELLOW. We had the lion’s share of the ball and most of the chances but just couldn’t convert. Boys played well together with lots of great passing and strong defending. Ended up going down 0-2.

U/9 Boys WHITE played a great game away against Birrarung at Princes Park. They scored with the first shot and then our boys applied pressure for the rest of the game coming away 1-2 winners!

On an awesome sunny morning U/9 Girls showed more great signs of learning how to play with each other and apply the skills of the game. After an early lapse in concentration, they worked so well together to put an awesome second half performance.

Facing a difficult Fitzroy Lions, it was a slow start from U/10 Boy’s YELLOW conceding early goals and went in at half time 4 goals to nil. The team then realised they were giving their opponents too much time on the ball. As the game progressed the team started to pressure and get more confidence and took the game on and did not receive any more goals in the 2nd half.

A dominant and entertaining win by the U/10 Girls YELLOW team today at home versus Kensington. We got off to a fast start and never looked back. The game was effectively over at 1/2 time with a 5-0 lead. In the 2nd half the girls finished off their great attacking work to come away with an 11-0 victory. There were hattricks and multiple braces. The most pleasing aspect of the win today, however, was not the score line but the overall improvement this team has displayed. Last time out we lost 3-1 to Kensington. Since then, our passing, defensive pressure, marking up, clearances, not taking the ball off teammates, throw ins and technical foot skills have come such a long way. Every player contributed evenly today, and the result was well deserved.

Senior Men lost 0-3 away to FC Birarrung. We were well in it in the first half but the opposition got on top as the game went on.

Thanks for reading – have a great week! GO BLUETONGUES! 🔵🟡⚽️🦎
