Tough conditions this week as our Bluetongues did their best on very wet and muddy pitches.
Enjoy this edition of the Weekend Wrap.
U/9 Boys Yellow played on a huge U/11 sized pitch with bigger goals at Northern Falcons which took a bit of getting used to. Goal-less first half but a couple of good chances with most of the possession. Went a goal down in first 2mins of second half but that spurred boys into action with 2 good goals in reply. Opposition scored with about 5mins to play and we managed to defend strongly to keep the score 2-2 at final whistle. Great game adapting to different conditions.
U/11 boys went to Fairfield Park to play Yarra Jets Blue away. We’d played them away in June too – narrowly winning 2-1 then. This time the boys piled on the pressure in the 1st half and put on a passing clinic in the 2nd, (they’re starting to play balls into space for teammates to run onto!) and had a strong 8-2 win. Most complete game this season – every lad contributed.
U/9 Boys Blues: After losing in the last minute last weekend vs Heidelberg Eagles (2-3) the boys were determined to beat Heidelberg United today. The astroturf pitch ensured a fast and free flowing game with plenty of accurate passing which was a joy to watch. However despite peppering the oppositions goal in the last 5 minutes the team narrowly lost 2-1.
U/9 Boys White had our game postponed until next week vs Brunswick Zebras due to pitch conditions.
The U/9 girls played away to the Darebin Falcons on a muddy pitch which didn’t hinder their enthusiasm for the game. Everyone contributed to what would be one of their best team performances for the year. Their increased understanding of defensive positioning to best limit their opposition’s sight of goal was awesome to see as was their desire to take the game on by going and seeking the ball rather than letting it come to them. Thank you for every players awesome effort.
U/12 Girls Blue threw in a gallant effort today V top of the ladder Craigieburn City FC. The opposition came to play whilst we appeared to have School Holiday blues. Going down 0-3 by half time we seemed to approach the game too cautiously – but after warming up we showed fire, personality and determination. 0-5 in the end, much to learn but super proud coaches and parents. Great effort girls!
U/10’s Boys Yellow played at home against an undefeated Fitzroy Lions, with no doubt our best performance of this season. The boy’s once again showed improvement with nice passing, great positioning and not taking a backwards step at winning strong tackles. Within the first 15 mins Alphington took a lead of 2-0 and could of had more of a lead but Fitzroy got themselves back into the game and at half time the scores were 3-2 for Alphington. The 2nd half was no different as both teams had good periods of domination with scores on equal terms and both teams never giving up. The boy’s showed a lot of courage to run away with the game and taking the win with the final scores 6-4 and taking Fitzroy Lions undefeated record away from them.
U/10 Boys Blue squad travelled to Fairfield today to take on the Yarra Jets. The Yarra squad hit Alphington early on the counter attack going up 1-0 and despite an even first half with some outstanding shot stopping from the Yarra keeper, the Jets capitalised on their lead going into the half 1-3. Unfortunately, the Bluetongues were not able to maintain their composure in the second half. Despite scoring a couple more goals chasing the game we were undone by some outstanding finishing from the Yarra side suffering a heavy 3-8 loss. Heads up Bluetongues, we will look for a big week back on the training track this week – team defence / structure the focus point ⚽️
U/10 Girls Yellow played away versus a skilful and determined Northern Falcons. In a tight contest, the girls went up 1-0 after sheer will resulted in a classy finish right on the 1/2 time whistle. In the 2nd half the girls showed relentless pressure and pinpoint passing to open up a 3-0 lead with two more brilliant finishes. One a free kick and another a solo run and needle thread finish. Overall a really accomplished win 3-1 versus the second best team in the comp.
The U/10 Girls Blue fielded a depleted squad for today’s clash with the Yarra Jets on a muddy home pitch. The girls dominated play showing great skill and teamwork throughout the match winning 15-0. Bravo girls!
Senior Men: Alphington FC 4 – FC Birrarung 2
Strong performance by our firsts in heavy conditions to make it 3 wins in a row.
Men’s Reserves: Alphington FC 2 – FC Birrarung 2
Ressies played well, dominating the match and were unlucky not to take all 3 points.
U/8 boys played Fitzroy Lions. A super entertaining game with lots of good running, shooting and some amazing goalkeeping . Whilst we led 2-1 at HT the game was a close affair. 2nd half we held our shape, fought hard, to get our 3rd win of the season. Kudos to the boys for sticking together against a team that had beaten us previously. Some happy boys at the end.
O/45s played Elite Old Boys at home. Bluetongues playing against a very technical and organised team were under pressure straight from the start. However we struck first pouncing on a mistake to lead after 15 mins. The lead didn’t last long with the equaliser quickly coming to make it 1-1 at the break. This was a high intensity game in tough conditions. Both teams could have won it in the 2nd half, sadly Old Boys scored with 2 mins to go to take all the points. A draw would have been a fair result, however, well played Bluetongues.
On a muddy home pitch, our U/12 Girls Yellow team faced off against Clifton Hill FC in a challenging match. The slippery conditions led to several slips and slides throughout the game. However, the opposition proved to be a formidable foe, taking a 0-3 lead into halftime. Despite the adversity, our girls showcased their resilience and determination, making several impressive runs on goal. Although we were unfortunate not to score. The final score ended at 0-6 but our team’s spirit remained unbroken.
O/55s UTD continued their strong season with 6-1 win to a traveling Castlemaine. Great turn around after they beat us 4-1 earlier in comp.
Thanks for reading – have a great week! GO BLUETONGUES! 🔵🟡⚽️🦎
