Weekend Wrap

29 Jul 2024 by Jessica Hughes

The weekend weather showed us torrential rain, sunshine and rainbows and lots and lots of mud. Well done to all our players who managed to get a game in under these tough conditions! Enjoy this edition of the Weekend Wrap.

On a miserable cold and rainy morning, our brave U/10 Boys yellows and blues joined forces to form a super squad. The well organised Jets jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead into half time, while the courageous Bluetongues adjusted to unfamiliar team mates and rapid rotations. The second half saw our team find their feet, hitting the back of the net a few times and only conceding a few, until the intense hail was enough to sound the alarm and run for cover! A big thanks to Dimi for refereeing and pulling together the last-minute fixture, Pete for organising, Will and Raj for filling in our empty goals, the coaching crew and selfless parents weathering a notable drenching. Enjoy a well earned hot chocolate Bluetongues!

Senior Men: Alphington FC 5 – Latrobe Uni SC 3
Super effort by our senior team to make it 4 wins straight.

Reserves: Alphington FC 3 – La Trobe Uni SC 4
Unfortunately our ressies played well but went down in a very competitive match.

The U/12 Girls Yellow team faced a daunting challenge as they travelled to play top-ranked Northern Falcons FC, a team that had previously defeated them 0-13. With several players still recovering from a long and tiring ski camp, the prospects looked bleak, especially considering the muddy and waterlogged pitch. However, the team’s determination and strong teamwork during the first half led to an even and spirited contest, with the Falcons holding a narrow 0-1 lead at halftime. As the second half got underway, Yellow’s confidence grew, and they quickly scored to level at 1-1. Although both teams created numerous scoring opportunities, Yellow’s persistence and grit allowed them to maintain a respectable scoreline of 2-4. Despite the loss, the team’s effort and growth earned the pride and admiration of their parents and coach.

U/15 Boys had a 0-0 draw with Yarra Jets. Our passing game worked well and the team controlled most of the pitch, most of the time. Some wonderful runs out of defence fed the forwards. And we welcomed two new players who did exceptionally well.

U/12 Girls Blue travelled to Heidelberg with a fortunate round on Astro turf. The weather turned on the waterworks and wind for the first half. Our girls fully focused from the whistle as they battled hard to find themselves 0-3 up at half time. Heidelberg certainly came to play but with one of the team performances of the season our Bluetongues came away eventual 1-4 winners. Not a weak link on the field. Everyone gave 100% and should be proud of their teamwork and afford. 💨🌧️🌈⚽️

U/10 Girls Yellow at home versus Fitzroy Lions was cancelled due to an unplayable pitch. Given the horrible conditions this morning, I think it was a blessing in disguise!

Thanks for reading – have a great week! GO BLUETONGUES! 🔵🟡⚽️🦎
