Weekend Wrap

Some fiercely competitive matches played out over the weekend, and despite the mud – Sunday morning delivered some glorious sunshine for our players and spectators! Enjoy the team reports in this edition of the Weekend Wrap.

The Over 55 Legends returned to playing after a 3 week break, with a home match v Beaumaris. On a cool afternoon, and playing on a very muddy Alphington Oval pitch, the team fell behind a couple of times, but ultimately secured 3 points with a 4-2 win. The team played well, with everyone working hard, and showing great Bluetongue spirit.

Such a great game for the U/9 Boys White! Everyone did their job today and it really showed what we can do after all the training and hard work the boys have put in. Defense was amazing all game, charging the ball down and the link up play between midfield and forwards was outstanding. Easily our most accomplished performance. Deserved 7-1 winners!

U/9 Boys Yellow delivered another strong team performance. Although most of the first half was played a man down we still went into the half 1-0 up. 2 quick ones to the opposition, one an unfortunate own goal meant we were quickly behind but the boys didn’t give up and a piece of individual perseverance getting the ball forward brought the scores level where it stayed to the end. Great effort from the boys! 2-2

U/10 Boys Yellow played away to FC Birrarung Blue’s and put in a very brave effort today. With no subs the boy’s played their hearts out! It didn’t take long for the home team to take the lead with 2 quick goals, our boy’s didn’t lay down, they started to take the game on, ending the first half being the stronger team with the scores at 2-1 to FC Birrarung. The 2nd half started like the first half with FC Birrarung scoring 2 quick goals but with Alphington not giving up, pushing the home team with some nice counter attacking football creeping the scores to 4-2. Alphington missing some opportunities the scores could of easily ended up 4-4 but at the end with not much more gas in the tank the boys went down 4-2.

U/10 Girls Yellow played a much different Pascoe Vale outfit today at home in muddy, heavy conditions. The game started as an arm wrestle with the opposition keeper making some incredible saves. After some great pressure and passing the girls went in 3-0 up at 1/2 time. In the 2nd half the girls continued their pressure and passing which saw them slam in another 7 for a runaway 10-0 victory. There were great individual efforts of 4 goals each and everyone contributed equally. A really solid effort all round to turn around a 2-0 loss earlier in the season.

U/9 Boys Blue lost 5-0 away to Old Ivanhoe. The scoreline didn’t reflect the effort of the blues, who were playing without any subs, and we were unlucky not to have scored at least twice. Despite the loss it was an encouraging game.

U/10 Boys Blue played away to Watsonia today on a challenging field. The first half was full off strong tackles as players adapted to the muddy conditions, with Alphington holding the lion’s share of possession and capitalising on one of their many chances to take a deserved 0-1 score into the break. The second half was similar to the first, with Alphington playing their best passing game of the season and managing to score another couple of goals to run out 1-3 winners. Defensive structure, calmness in possession and team build up play out of the back the highlight. 👏

U/11 Boys went to Princes Park to take on Birrarung FC Yellow. After an even opening 5 mins the boys’ passing clicked up a notch and they gradually but increasingly relentlessly crushed their valiant opponents 9-0.

U/8 Boys played a return fixture against Darebin. This was an entertaining game between 2 evenly matched teams. We led 1-0 and 2-1 but Darebin got a deserved equaliser near the end. Superb effort from all the boys this morning against a team we had previously lost too, so much improvement and development each week. Final score 2-2.

The U/9 Girls played away against a physical Darebin United outfit. All the girls showed great tenacity and determination in not letting the oppositions approach to the game lose sight of their areas of focus. Positioning for helping team mates, trying to win the ball higher up the pitch and making complete passes were all on our minds for the game. All the girls did an amazing job across the pitch and continue to show that they are improving week in, week out.

The U/12 Girls Yellow team faced a tough challenge on the road against Northcote City FC, taking to the field with only 8 players and no substitutes, giving their opponents a significant numerical advantage. Despite the physical play from Northcote City FC, the Yellow team showed remarkable growth, commitment, and resilience. They persevered and continued to give their all until the final whistle. Although the score ended in a 0-11 defeat, the team’s determination and attitude earned praise from parents and coach alike.

On a beautiful, sun bathed morning the U/10 Girls Blue played Clifton Hill away, on a spacious (and good condition) pitch. After conceding an early goal, the girls gritted their teeth and starting using the open spaces to their advantage, heading into half time ahead 3-1. The second half saw some very tired players on both sides, and all players should be proud of pushing through their tiredness. A hard earned 4-1 victory.

O/55s UTD played Croydon at home on an unforgettable pitch. Evened out the sides a bit for most of the game, unlucky to come away with 0-0 score, given that we hit the post 4 times and they didn’t register a decent shot.

O/45s played Barnstoneworth at home. We started fast, passing the ball well and attacking with pace. We glided into 2-0 lead but Barnstoneworth got one back just before half-time. 2nd half was tighter but we saw out the game to win 5-3. On another day we might easily have had 10 but their goalkeeper played superbly.

U/12 Girls Blue started brightly going 2 up in the early exchanges at home v Mill Park. With a second spot on the ladder up for grabs there was all to play for. The team fell behind a couple after the restart and found it difficult to claw their way back. A thrilling game, the team played well, with everyone working hard showing great Bluetongue spirit. 5-3 loss in the end.
