Weekend Wrap

27 Aug 2024 by Jessica Hughes

This past weekend was filled with excitement and energy as our teams took to the field. Dive into this week’s match reports to relive the highlights and celebrate the achievements of our talented Bluetongues.

After a season of draws and narrow defeats, dominant performances without the goals to match and almost-well-earned wins snatched away by last-minute equalisers, the U/15 Boys registered a stunning victory at home to top-of-the-table and previously unbeaten Doncaster Rovers. The team has worked hard in training this week and it really paid off. A slight tactical change was deployed to dampen the shooting threat of the only team to beat us convincingly this season and the boys executed it superbly. Everything came together today in a display of discipline, attacking flair, incredible work-rate and team spirit. The table-toppers were restricted to only one clear chance while the Bluetongues were unlucky not to take the lead from a great first half move. Our boys weathered the storm of a strong start to the second half by Doncaster before taking the lead from a stunning passing move and seeing out the last 15 minutes with an astonishing display of discipline and calmness for a 1-0 win. A huge thanks to the Doncaster officials for their incredibly kind words at the end of the match and the behaviour of their players despite the surprise first loss. Both teams did their clubs proud today.

The Over 55 Legends travelled south for a Saturday lunch time kick off at Tjilatjirrin Reserve v Sandringham. On a warm afternoon, the Bluetongues dominated from the start, leading 3-0 at half time, and ending up winning 5-1. When the team played to feet, and looked up for options, we looked good. When we rushed, we sometimes gave up the ball too easily. A nice win on the road against solid opposition.

Senior Men: Roxburgh Park 2 – Alphington 4
First team played well in a tough away game, staying composed to make it 7 wins from 9, since the halfway point of the season.

Reserves: Roxburgh Park 0 – Alphington FC 2
Our seconds played well to take all 3 points, after our keeper was sent off in the first half, staying disciplined and keeping to their structure.

U/9 Boys Blues played Eltham at home. We came into half time with a narrow 2-1 lead and then absorbed 10 minutes of pressure in the second half. The boys found their fighting spirit and piled on the attacking pressure, splitting their defence several times to end up 5-1 winners.

U/9 Yellow Boys must have been watching their mates in the blue team in the game beforehand, as we got off to a very strong start and went into half time with a deserved 2-0 lead. Watsonia found their attacking spirit in the second half but we did really well to absorb their pressure with lots of defensive support. We couldn’t keep all their shots out and the game ended 2-2.

U/9 Girls played the Brunswick Zebras and again showed that their understanding of he game continues to grow. Taking thoughtful and constructive field positions and looking for teammates showed a great example of this. It was a great game to watch with end to end soccer and lots of midfield struggles. Another great game by the girls.

U/11 Boys passed their way through Northern Falcon Blues to win 6-1. Huge thanks to stand-in coach Dave McNab, part of the great community of parents whose help is invaluable.

U/10 Boys Blue took on Clifton Hill for the their last home fixture of the season. After an even first half with few chances at both ends, the teams were all tied up at the break 1-1. The second half saw Alphington focus on winning the tackle and closing down the space in midfield. The blues managed to get on top in the second half, playing the early ball to the attackers who managed to take their chances with some great finishing. Final score 5-3 to the blue tongues. Great job 👏

Good game from the U/9 Boys White today. Great passing through the middle and some fantastic crosses. SRBIJA were better today and showed us the importance of working hard to get back as both their goals were on the break. Winning 5-2 was a pretty fair result in the end.

U/10 Girls Blue travelled out to Watsonia to take on a much improved opponent. A tough first half saw our girls hold a narrow 3-2 lead at the break. A couple of oranges seemed to give the girls the energy they needed to kick on and win 7-2. A Bravo effort to the Brown family for choosing better oranges than the opposition with this obviously being the prominent factor in our victory today. Go Bluetongues!

The U/12 Girls Yellow team hosted Doreen United in a highly anticipated matchup, and the game lived up to expectations. The first half was a thrilling back-and-forth, highlighted by a spectacular save from Yellow’s goalkeeper. This sparked a surge of momentum for Yellow, who created numerous scoring chances and even scored an extraordinary defensive clearance that sailed uncontested into the opposition’s net. Yellow took a 2-1 lead into halftime. In the second half, both teams scored early, but Yellow remained relentless, applying constant pressure on Doreen’s defense. Ultimately, Yellow emerged with a solid 4-2 victory. The players, parents, and coach were overjoyed with the win.

U/10 Girls Yellow put in a dominant performance versus Kensington at home today. We had 8 individual goal scorers in an 11-0 win. Everyone spread out and created space for themselves and that was rewarded with brilliant passing into the open for some quality tap in goals. Solid running up the field and back to defend from everyone ensured a clean sheet.
