The Over 55 Legends returned to Alphington Park for an early evening Saturday match v Burwood City FC Green. In very windy conditions, the Bluetongues withstood some early physical play from the opposition, and took control of the game. The Bluetongues scored 2 goals in the first half and 2 in the second to register a 4-0 victory. All played well in one of the team’s best performances this year against strong opposition.

Men’s Seniors: Alphington FC 2 – Melbourne University SC 2
A disappointing draw, as we conceded late after the team worked hard to get on top of our opponents.

Men’s Reserves: Alphington FC 2 – Melbourne University SC 1
Another strong display against an opponent challenging for the title.

U/9 Boys Blue (played Watsonia Heights Blue away) fought back from 3-0 to bring it to 3-2 with a minute to go, but with the coach wanting to snatch the draw – the opposition took their chance to make it 4-2 with the final kick. Their goal keeper was man of the match saving at least 10 times. The players were proud of their determination and fighting spirit that almost paid off.

U/10 Boys Blue traveled to Heidelberg on a blustery Sunday morning . The game proved as lively as the wind with solid tackles being the feature of the day. Alphington took an early lead putting together some nice moments against the wind, however Heidelberg fought back equalising and going into the break 1-1. Despite the continued tough challenges in the second half, our boys maintained their composure matching the physical play, defending as a unit and playing positive football until the final whistle. Well done Blues, 1-1 the final score. Great team effort!

U/10 Girls Yellow had an awesome finish to the season versus a tough Darebin Falcons!! A really hard fought, back and forth game produced tons of chances on both sides. The Bluetongues came out on top 2-1 thanks to two great finishes in what was a really tight game. Our passing, creation of space and perseverance was on display and we battled all match. Every player gave their all, ran hard, defended tirelessly and worked together as a team. What a great way to finish the season out with a strong, characteristic win. The girls only lost 1 game for the entire season. A commendable effort. We now shift focus to the Doreen Cup in a couple of weeks to keep the momentum flowing.
Good luck to all teams for the remainder of the season and thank you for a great 2024.

U/9 Boys Yellow travelled out to Watsonia and came home with a brilliant 7-1 win. All the things we’ve been working on throughout came together today. 2-1 at the break and great passing really broke the game open in the second half helped by really solid finishing.

U/11 Boys were away to nearby Northern Falcons – a strong team – and stormed their fortress to come away with a 3-1 win. Our first goal was the result of an elegant 4 piece passing move which eviscerated their defence. Our defensive pressure was good but our goalkeeper was sublime – he kept out 2 or 3 certain goals.

U/9 girls travelled to Richmond to face Fitzroy in extremely challenging windy conditions. The girls played an amazingly thoughtful and tactical game considering their age and experience. Understanding the pros and cons of the wind they adapted their team work to produce an outstanding game. It really brought to the fore how far they have come across the season. Awesome work girls.

U/10 Boys Yellow played away to Clifton Hill Blue’s on a hard and bumpy ground in tough conditions, we faced a determined team that was out to make it a very difficult game for our boy’s that at times felt like they had an extra man with the referee 🤭. Clifton Hill took an early lead but our boy’s started to get into the game, we started to win hard tackles and our passing game started to break their midfield and defensive lines and with an equaliser the scores were at 1-1 at half time. With a few of the boy’s coming back from sickness Alphington really gave it their all, dug deep and found a way to string 4 passes together and score a winner in the 2nd half making the scores 2-1. With great defending from our back line, the team held strong with everyone playing their part. Alphington was unlucky to get a goal disallowed. Great team performance!

U/10 Girls Blue played their last home game for the season as we welcomed the Northern Falcons. Both sides played really well and showed heightened levels of skill in windy conditions. But as Dr. Peter Venkman (played by Bill Murray) said in the amazing movie Ghostbusters, “We came. We saw. We kicked it’s Ass!”, running away winners 4-0.

U/12 Girls Yellow faced off against Eltham Redbacks FC on a blustery morning at Alphington Park, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch. Both teams applied intense pressure, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Despite Eltham having the wind at their backs in the first half, Yellow’s resilient defense held strong, thwarting their attacks and sparking swift counterattacks. At halftime, Eltham led 1-0. Rejuvenated by the break and buoyed by the wind, Yellow launched a determined pursuit of an equaliser in the second half. Excellent passing sequences yielded promising scoring chances, but unfortunately, the ball refused to find the back of the net. Ultimately, Yellow were defeated 0-2.

U/12 Girls Blue faced their final opposition of the season. Moreland’s home ground served up some wild winds in challenging conditions. Some unfortunate bias home referring certainly killed the spirit of the game and failed to cap off a wonderful season for both sets of girls. Mostly undeterred our Bluetongues fought till the end to bring home a lot of courage and resilience. Our final game that ended in defeat but our season was won over by the amazing spirit and togetherness of the team.

The U/15 Boys fought out a 1-1 draw away to Glen Waverley in crazy conditions on Sunday. Both teams turned up in white and we scrambled to get together a random selection of red, orange and pink bibs for the game while the home team tried to find a football to play with after the teams from the previous game had taken them all home. As the referee (who was awesome) stood shaking his head saying, “This doesn’t happen at Old Trafford” we all figured it was going to be one of those days. The first half was messy, as both teams struggled to overcome the wind and two well-organised defences. The Bluetongues made much better use of the spaces on a big pitch after the break and created some great chances, hitting the bar twice and putting several shots narrowly over. Then, for the third time this season, Glen Waverley won the ball on the edge of their own box and hit us with a very quick break to take a late lead. Just as the coach was about to make a reckless, throw-everything-at-them substitution, our boys hit back with a similar break, going straight down the middle for a well-taken and well-deserved equaliser.

Thanks for reading – have a great week! GO BLUETONGUES! 🔵🟡⚽️🦎
